THE BREAK - WINKIPOP

FINALIST

  • Crimsoneye I'm writing up a film justification as part of my course now... if anyone was wondering:
The beginning shots are intentionally jilted and slow to increase awareness of the fantasy and lack of realism.. this becomes more 'professional' as the fantasy and reality collide in a girl's fantasy world.
The settings are all bright childish paintings, then become grays and blacks in the city. In the city pre-made interiors are present.
The costumes were the most important part of identifying the characters as a beach family, the wife's outfit change symbolizes her switch to city life and leads to her alcoholism.
The lighting was all even (or as even as I could get it with what I had) for the characters except for the employer, who was shadowed to indicate a shrouding of intentions.
The camera becomes handheld in the final moments, and paired with fast cuts (which match the pace of the music) to add a sense of anxiety.
And I'm assuming you notice that in the girl's room with the barbies on the shelves, you also notice the family painting from the barbie's house as well as a painting of a dog.

    • Crimsoneye I'm not going to say I did it perfectly, but I think I got what I wanted in there.

    • Crimsoneye Hey thanks, I give myself a 6% chance of winning but I appreciate the support! The barbie car would have cost nearly $100nz in a store, so I think the handmade one works quite well ;) The burning was rather interesting...

Description:

None of my human actors were available at the same time, so I made do with a whole bunch of toys! Just a bit of fun. I tried to throw in some mise en scene, lighting, subjective shots and editing pace for effect. Even in the world of plastic, money doesn't always mean happiness!
Having manic issues with conversion, hopefully this file is still decent enough quality.
