  • Zaf Hey man thanks for your vote but more for your thoughtful comment on my vid! Just reciprocated the vote not by obligation but because i liked your idea... thought it fits well with the Moby universe. Liked the part where the elephant makes the sand "fly" in the air!
What i love from what i see in this competition is the whole different concepts people thought of (stop motion, puppets, etc)... Anyway keep up the good work!

  • WaWe Perfection!! All I would change is not to have the "1 year later"-parts in it. And I was hoping he would have found the chicken friend, too... Anyway, a great video, 1 more vote coming up! :)

    • baudrillardo Yes I know it might be a sad ending, but I found that the song didn't have an optimistic resolution and that it also ends with a somber tone, as if nothing had changed in the end, as if it had all gone back to the beginning, when desperation it's jut ensuing for the first time.
      Thanks for your kind words!

  • her0010 Hey mate i really liked the use of the chicken and the elephant, the end shot looking into the amphitheater looking thing was amazing. What part of Spain are you from? Can you recommend any film schools over there that are amazing, i'm thinking of moving from Australia to Europe to study. Spain is my first pick, maybe we can work on some projects together haha.

    Cheers mate

    • baudrillardo Hey her0010, while I'm not from Spain, I live here in Barcelona. I don't know much about film schools here, let alone about good ones. Actually everybody I've come to know that has been to one of those film schools in Spain are usually disappointed by the lack of seriousness.
I myself went to one in Madrid, and it wasn't a nightmarish situation, but it was also a barely enriching experience as much of what was done was done without much passion or interest from the school members (the students, we were a different story altogether). It seems that the primary function of most film schools- at least in Spain- it's to squeeze money out of students. I would firmly recommend you against enrolling in a film school, unless you get a sound advice by somebody that's been to it and whose opinion you really trust.(I guess that's why you asked me in the first place)
That being said, don't doubt to contact me if you finally end up coming here (Barcelona) and at least I can show around.
      Cheers!

  • Fernando Hey Carlos, nice video! It's very simple and very exciting. I liked the mix of real-life locations with living puppets and the changes in the weather through the video. It has some documentary thing in a way.

My favourite part is the snow part, really liked the way you used that for your story. It really gives it an atmosphere of loss and despair.

The puppeteering was really good too, i remark the moment when the elephant falls, it fells very real and powerfull.

Wish you the best. You have my vote.

    • baudrillardo I'm very proud of that falling moment too. However I feel that your comment compliments my editing because there were 2 hours of uninteresting footage or unremarkable footage and mistakes out of every minute that was good or magical.
Thanks for your vote and your words!

  • sdkellam Thanks for your comment. The combination of your framing and cutting scheme with the song - plus the inherent cuteness of the puppet and chicken - evokes a feeling of real pathos. Well done indeed.
    2 years ago - comment
    • baudrillardo That might have been the biggest challenge to frame it in a way that could retain the seriousness of the feelings evoked in the subtext, while retaining the whimsicality of the context.

  • kibishipaul Hi.

This is a great idea. I love the storyline and use of the puppet. It was original and kept my interest all the way through. One thing I have to agree with rodrigohm though is that I think some of the scenes could have been reduced or slowed down a little.

Many thanks for your comments on my movie. LIke you, I got a lot out of making it, even if it doesn't win anything. btw You can get Moviestorm for the Mac. It's what I use! Look me up on their website if you do under 'kibishipaul' ;)

    • baudrillardo Thanks for your very nice words.
yes, I think it could've evoked a different vibe, maybe a little bit more observant. I thought about the length of the shots and tried to deliberately change it to create different results on the viewer. The relentlessness of the Elephant's search is a key aspect to it, as the quicker they get the more optimistic he is about finding the chicken, whereas the longer the shot takes the more his perspective is leaning towards negativity or despair.

  • rodrigohm Hi Carlos, I like it in overall. Maybe you could use longer shots and reducing the number of scenes thus making it a little slower.

I like it and find it very artistic. At first I wasn´t sure about the puppets but you pulled it off and got your story on screen.

    Abrazos.

    2 years ago - comment
    • baudrillardo Thanks Indiereel. It is true the song is incredibly flexible to interpretation, as any piece of music, even one with the most descriptive lyrics that can be (not this song's case though) can be subjected to just totally different treatment.
That's one of the beauties of music as an art.

  • salem How did people react when you exposed them to the elephant :)
    2 years ago - comment
    • baudrillardo People where mostly trying to pretend that something extremely weird was not happening. Most people smiled, some of the smiling ones quickly stopped smiling when I saw them, and it was not the Elephant looking at them lol. Even though I was handling the elephant, people would smile to it , but back at me hahaha.
      It was a wonderful experience!

    • Elephant This is really moving. I thought there was going to be a reunion in the middle when he sees the yellow buoy. The first time I didn't quite know what happened, but on 2nd viewing I saw that it was not his friend, and it was especially sad.
I'd love your thoughts on ours!

Artist: Moby
Song: Wait For Me
05 Apr 2010

Description:

Synopsis:

One little elephant has been roaming Barcelona and Madrid's streets for months, relentlessly looking for his one good friend after his sudden disappearance on a Mediterranean beach one tragic afternoon.

Traces of the small chicken anywhere, yellow spots everywhere, is it him or is it just his hurt mind and imagination? Struggling against the elements of nature and the passing of time, he will do everything his tired body can do to find him, for as long as he can.

ONE IMPORTANT NOTE for ENVIRONMENTAL concerned individuals:
the beach was not polluted as the little yellow chicken doll was later retrieved from the water (pulling a long string, no less) but unfortunately the yellow plastic bottle was already far floating on the sea by the time I got there, so I just took advantage of its appearance to incorporate it into the story.

ONE LEGAL NOTE:
all recognizable faces have been blurred for privacy reasons.
all foreground noticeable brands have been blurred for copyright reasons too.

Production Notes:

This video was born out of love, no really! See I bought this adorable little elephant hand puppet in one trip to Budapest, Hungary where my grandmother lives. He was all by himself waiting for a friendly hand to bring him to life!
I figured it would be very neat to show it one day to my beloved girlfriend who lives in NYC while we would Skype.

But before doing that I found myself thinking larger, and so I began taking this little fellow and my camera to the streets, whenever I could. During months and by chance I would come upon great sightings and then I would make sure I would capture them, always using the little elephant as a witness. I had to learn not to feel embarrassed in public for moving a puppet with my left hand and shooting with my camera on the other, and pretend that what I was doing was perfectly normal. I would be going out to work with the Elephant in my bag in case I would come upon something great. The idea was to make a huge video-love letter during the times we've been missing each other. It was an adventure and a riot.

I did come upon something great when I found out about the contest via Moby's mailing list. It wasn't until later that, after going through hours and hours of footage I saw that there was an inherent melancholy in many of the shots I made, and so it could encompass with the mood of the music and the content of the lyrics. (Before that I was thinking of shooting something from zero)

I decided I had to write a simple story based on the footage I already had and make that my contest entry, but there was something missing: the Elephant's goal was not clear. That's when the little yellow chicken came into the story, so I had to go out and shoot several new shots, this time deliberately with the purpose of the video in order to create a story arc. In the end when I see the final cut I say to myself I really really love this video. And so does my girlfriend.

I loved the experience and even if I don't win, I've already won so much, as I've already created something I truly adore, and share what began as this little display of love, proudly to anyone in the interwebs and beyond.
