Its a footage from a movie that had no budget limit and unfortunately never came out... "L'enfer" d'Henry George Clouzot. Recently a french documentarist made a long length about it.

  • eduardomayen i don't understand what this whole controversy is all about. Mr Lynch IS the master of re-sampling, re-cutting and re-imagining, so why should we limit our creativity and not honor his creative spirit when we make our pieces. As i recall "Mulholland Drive" started as a pilot and then later evolved into a feature; and that doesn't make it any less of an accomplishment. Filmmaking is an organic process that evolves, morphs and changes states, let's not set any limits to what we can create and share with the world.

    • SachaMartins Even if Wyatt and I obviously don't share the same ideas about the purpose of Cinema, I agree with those here who think that the re-use/re-edit of ready-made stuff is totally legitimate. Wyatt only went wrong without clearly pointing that out, knowing that numerous viewers might have already watched Alice. And from what I've seen on this site, a LOT of people [me included] took the same path, mixing already made images or previously explorer concepts into "some" new things. We have people living in France and shooting in the Death Valley [organizing a shooting at 6000 miles from your home in 2 weeks is an intriguing exploit]. We have sequences shot in the summer from people living in the northern hemisphere while the contest started on December... Even some experimental movies posted here might proceed from concepts their directors already explored in previous unreleased works [I’m one of them]. The only difference between Wyatt and those people, is that he could not hide...

But I also agree with people who think that, if some sequences are strong on the visual level, especially during the first half of the movie, Wyatt’s grammar and aesthetic generally are on par with mass-audience-American cinema standards and the second half is just a collection of cosmetic non-subversive clichés about what male think about women’s phantasms. Wyatt made a music video from Lynch’s song but he never pretended to be a Jacobin. And Angelo Badalamenti, Lynch’s acolyte, is FAR from being a subversive music composer. I don’t khow how old you are, Wyatt, but probably a bit younger that I am, and I wouldn’t think to have betrayed my principles if, ten years from now, I have made a movie like yours…

    • wyattdenny In the year 2000 I wrote this as a feature. It was the first script I had ever written. I wrote half of it on an airplane ride to argentina. I had never flown before and I was nervous. I thought. If this plane goes down hopefully some pages might be floating in the wind. Maybe someone could find them and Make something of it.
I wrote the other half on the trip back home.
I sent it to Lynch but it was sent back unread due to legal reasons.
I was young and these ideas of women's phantasm's were very strong.
I kept them alive in the short as a marker of a place, I was, in time.
After I made the short, which was more like a an art installation based off the script
      ( Originally 30 min.)
People had a hard time understanding it.
So I, conformed, cut it down, and spelled it out. Turning it into a more cliche' anti drug add. I was never able to truly capture what I was after. But I was happy with what we had.
I realized that I have grown too much as a writer and a person that I went back and rewrote the entire thing. While I love it now more than ever. It's budget is to big for me. All these years of work on it and it might never have it's true voice.
So this contest came along, I thought, maybe it could finally have a home. I could be happy with that, and move on.
I was never trying to hide. I just really didn't think anyone had really seen it. I think it makes a better music video, than a short. Just want a home for it.
I understand all sides of the debate.
If I upset anyone, I apologize.

    • SachaMartins But Wyatt, I was just defending the way I've worked from previous material against those you were insulting you [after all, you made two movies with the same materials - as the unforgettable MARGUERITE DURAS did]. I still think you're perfectly legitimate as a film maker and that some of your visuals are strong AND interesting even if we don't share the same opinion about neither cinematographic grammar nor about what kind of disturbing purposes Arts may serve...

      Good luck, sincerely.

  • David Myrick I know that our video has stirred up many mixed emotions from the other competitors but for those that have been supportive of what this competition represents (creativity on all levels, hard work and most of all......FUN!) We thank you......truly. A lot of people seem to think that this film had a huge budget, plenty of time for preparation, etc.
The reality is that we had NO budget. All we had was a group of friends thirsty for the experience of making something truly interesting, inspiring and epic for everyone involved. Yes, Wyatt had always hoped that one day Mr. Lynch would view this piece in it's entirety as a short but at the same time we also knew that the odds of that happening were slim to none. But the Universe had other plans (as it usually does) for our film and that came to us by the way of this contest. Mr. Lynch has been inspirational to Wyatt in ways that are obvious in his filmmaking but on a personal level as well.
So......however you choose to view the situation, we feel that it boils down to this.........
We are ALL striving as artists to have our work seen by others and especially by those that have inspired the work to begin with. We are ALL striving to stay motivated and inspired on a daily basis in our work and in our lives. We are ALL choosing to enter a contest that may seem flawed by some and yet is so meant to be for others. We wish all of the participants the very best in your continued pursuit of creation because isn't that what it's all about?

  • Leo Horsfield Competitions suck, always brings the worst out in people. I like the original film, and the re edit for the song has been done very well. Unfortunately i cant say i hope it will win for obvious reasons. In the end of the day these sort of competitions are as much about getting your work seen as they are about winning, so i fully appreciate why you would do this. Especially as the original film is clearly heavily influenced by Lynch. I dont wish you luck in this competition but i do in your future carrier as a film maker.

  • lompoc42 I appreciate the stupid amounts of obvious hard work here, I really do. It's polished, it looks like a million $, but it lacks the spirit of this whole contest. The idea is to create something from nothing in a short, momentarily-inspired amount of time to create the brilliance, no? While you've said that you made the short film with the intention of Lynch seeing it, it's still just out of context here.

  • wyattdenny The budget for this film was 5,000.00.
The price of a good camera that it would take to film it.
The blood, sweat, and tears, favors and hard labor was priceless.
I my self have never even had that much money, but I was lucky enough to have the stars line up and years of favors I had provided to allow me to make a film that would possibly be viewed in the eyes of David Lynch. In the end to do anything but be a short film, we did what we could and it never found a home until now. This video is not a threat, the votes are low, It's just a seed that came to finally be.
There are bigger fish to fry than me. I've seen some beautiful videos.

  • SunnydaZe This is so Lynchian! Not the video but all of the comments... The age old battle of sleek vs. gritty. Art vs. Porn. Big Budget vs. No Budget. Style vs. Substance. Cliche vs. Obscure. It's all here and accounted for! The video does look amazing and the idea of drugs and people having an appearance beyond the physical is handled very well. Seems the moral is the evil of drugs and the dark side of Hollywood and the path of despair which those things lead and yet the main actress is a porn star. Weird mixed message. Then the "controversy" of this being a re-edited short film... I can't help but think Lynch gave such a brief window to film with-in because he wanted people to work fast and rough. But I am not against re-using footage if it serves the song, but it seems this short film has a high profile so does that cancel out its ability to work as a music video? These are all great questions! And isn't that what film is supposed to do? Inspire passionate discussion? So, on that level I will say this clip succeeds. Wish I had the crew and equipment used to shoot the film, but don't we all??

    • lindstrom I agree. I actually came to this site to vote on the other song's video for a friend, and I started checking out some of the other videos. There were a lot of valiant efforts, but this one kept my attention and clearly has the most coherent story and production value. I keep thinking about the weird characters particularly. Very memorable.
    • dalcore Funny. came back today to see it again. Keep thinking about the characters too. That guy with the blacked-out eyes was pretty creepy, but somehow not malevolent. Go figure- David Lynch bringing out the dark stories. This one, however, was a nice balance of dark and light.
  • lindstrom Wow! This is the most amazing video! Very original imagery, and incredible production. I liked how the girl's dreams was something she kept in this mysterious box. And the characters seemed archetypal- like those from dreams- odd, and vaguely threatening.

Peaceful revolution, inner one first of all. Giving opnions isn't destroying. Surely is mr Wyatt understand what i mean. He seems smart. Point is that it's cosmetic in a cosmetic world. Hollywood like isn't it?
For example, what i've understood from Lost Highway for example, is that it's partly against the Hollywood system of values. And i say that this movie is part of this system. And i won't stop my critics Adolf, heu Dav, sorry. Maybe try to build a constructive one, Dav?

    • mol Thx saddam!
I luv ur clever comment. Keep goin my friend. If u find it an incridible video, to m, is that ur completely part of the system. No own self. let's make movies with some dwarves and fashion make up, sednaoui like, put some artificial glow and lens flares as much as make up, use plastic girls to play so called hookers and shoot a glossy car to look weird my dear. And be more consensual than ever. like the power want you to be honey. U're a FHM reader r u?
    • mol Well anyway, is anybody able to make a real critic?
looks like, wow, it's glowin , it shines! Like when i make movies for cosmetic products and deal with those stupid marketing people, saying, "yeah , we got some impact with that!"
Can u understand what i say? All that glitter isn't gold. Maybe u can't read between the lines?
    • mol @Wyatt: it's just a point of view Wyatt. I don't hate your movie at all! i just say what i think and what to misses the stuff. I think that u reedit ur movie, wich i watched by the way is a good thing, use ur work is normal. I know this is hard work. Every movie, even a shitty non descent like mine is hard work. i just think it looks like a showreel. Wich, maybe in the world we're livin in Wyatt, appears to be a good choice. I personaly think that trying to tease and please the unconscious ones is pure uncounsciousness. Of course, the contrary is a hard and lonely way.
Kandinsky used to say that there's no must in art cos art is free. (Mayor of Bagdad, kandinsky was a painter and writer).
Harmony Korine used to say fuck of.
Keep up the work Wyatt. Good luck.
    • Genero Appreciate it if you can please refrain from getting personal guys. A lot of hard work has gone into this and other videos so if for some reason you see the need to be critical, at least try to be constructive and respectful. Thanks
      1 year ago
    • therewerenosurvivors I think that's the point people are trying to make -- a lot of hard work HASN'T gone into this video.

A lot of hard work went into this guy's short film, sure. Irrespective of its content or quality, this is just a hasty re-edit of an earlier work passing it off as something new and with the hope of snatching victory away from people who've produced ORIGINAL videos for this competition.

As a side note, how can this video reflect the mood and meaning of David Lynch's music if 95% of it was written, directed, produced and edited before the music was ever heard?
    • therewerenosurvivors Also, I'm curious... Will wyattdenny be prepared to hand over exclusive license of the video footage used from his short film?

      According to your FAQ:

"We retain the exclusive license fro [sic] all winning videos and in most cases this is transferred to the artist/label so they can use it as the official music video."

After all, the footage used in this video would now belong to Genero / David Lynch / the record label. Surely, then, wyattdenny wouldn't be able to feature these clips in his short film? Bye bye to http://www.aliceandthewhitehair.com, etc. A chunk of that film is now owned by David Lynch's record label! So take it down!

The best way to avoid this confusion? Produce something NEW and ORIGINAL, not recycled. It's an insult to people who are making something from scratch.

Incidentally, on an artistic level, I find the video, in spite of its gloss, to be a shallow, vacant male fantasy. The sexualisation of motor vehicles? Check. Wafish models pretending to be prostitutes? Check? Gratuitous ass shots? Check. Seems more like an FHM photo-shoot to me...

    • Silenzio SSSHHH! Therewerenosurvivors, Mol, Lompoc, Mayor... and all you people! Am I wrong, or besides, making tough and so-called "radical" critics, what have you done? Have you ever made a film?? Do you know how long it takes, how much energy's needed? And I don't think much of directors here did a special one in such a short time especially for the contest. So what? Which matters is the result, not the process. Keep making movies Wyatt. Use excerpt of your movies, who cares? Besides the magnificent four- (quoted in the first line)
Be seeing you! And don't forget:SSsssssshhhh.
