I'm a filmmaker and photographer from the Australian countryside. I graduated from Sydney Film School in 2010, since then I've been exhibiting my photography, and have focused on producing music videos. Creating music videos combines my love of music and images.

Read the Q&A with andyp89 What was it about Genero.tv that made you want to enter? Has it had an impact on your exposure or career?

The reason I entered Genero.tv was so I could expose my work to not just a large audience, but to music industry professionals and major record labels. I saw it as an opportunity to launch myself into the industry. After winning the competition the exposure has been amazing. My website views gained by thousands per day, and i was approached by several production companies interested in representing me. I was blown away by the oppurtunties that came from this.

How would you describe your film making style?

I would describe my film making style as highly stylised darkness, with a very cinematic approach. An engaging idea and interesting cinematography is really important to me. I also put alot of energy into making the video edit dance with the music, to create a harmonious blend of music and video.

What sort of work have you done in the music video space before?

The two music videos which I created for the Duran Duran competition were the first music videos I've ever made. I've been making short films since I was 10, but music always dominated my films, they controlled the edit, the cinematography and even the storyline. I got to a point where I was writing scripts based on the song i wanted in the soundtrack. So it was only natural to begin creating music videos.

Where are you hoping to head in the future?

The obvious dream would be to create music videos for my favourite musicians. I'm hugely passionate about music, so I plan to channel this passion through both music videos, and hopefully one day a feature film.

  • Gredi13 Man, I have to hand it to you, your work is really great. Your coloring is extremely impressive as well, you seem to have mastered a technique in creating film-like images with the 7d, a camera I too have but have not mastered coloring on yet. I shoot in a flat picture style and usually color correct with magic bullet, but after seeing your videos I MUST ask what kind of color correcting technique you use. really great work my friend!

  • alex whyte Hey mate, your cinematography skills are awesome! I am guessing you shoot on a 7D? What compression do you use to upload to genero, your videos always look so clean? I try a quicktime mov with mp4 compression but they never really look 100%.

    • andyp89 Thanks Alex, I love you're work too, always epic! Yeah that's right, I shoot on a 7D. I usually export the video as Apple ProRes 422 from Final Cut, then I use MPEG Streamclip (free program) to compress it to the specs that Genero mention on the site (H.264, 5,000 KBPS etc). I find this keeps the quality pretty clean. Good luck with it all :)

    • dreamlike Well Andrew, you're works are totally amazing and, believe me, I really think you're one of the most talented guy I've recently seen.
Just a curiosity: your slow motion are directly taken when you film (so 1280x720 with the canon 7d) or you create your slow motion in post processing? Thanks and congratulation for all

    • andyp89 Thanks Alberto, I really appreciate it :) Yeah I shoot slow motion in the camera (1280x720). All the best!

    • andyp89 Hey congrats on the win! Thanks for the good words :) The 'Umbrella' series was taken in fog at sunrise, really beautiful weather condition for nice pics. In Photoshop I played with the colours and made the lighting more dramatic.

Genero Each filmmaker retains the right to their footage if they don't win, so it's absolutely fine to re-cut it and enter it into another competition if you feel it suits the song
