Read the Q&A with jethromassey What was it about Genero.tv that made you want to enter?

I heard about the David Lynch competition on Twitter, and "Good Day Today" seemed to fit pretty well with an idea I'd had for a short film or music video, so I went out and shot the film. Its great to have the deadline of a competition closing date, and to have good tunes to work with. Once you have an idea you feel goes with a track you like, it's pretty hard to resist making the film - I'm finding these competitions pretty addictive.

How would you describe your film making style?

Eclectic, which I'm painfully aware isn't necessarily a good thing in the film industry. I suspect it's much easier to get work if you specialise in one particular style. But I'm fascinated by many different styles - I'm a big fan of the old silent comedians, I'm drawn to punk culture and to the dark sexy worlds of Parisian burlesque, but I'm also inspired by the possibilities modern technology brings. And all these things find their way into my films one way or another... If there's anything that unites my work, its that I always find myself focusing on the human experience at the centre of any story or idea - I love trying to think of new devices to put in a film, and to try and compose beautiful shots, but those things are a little empty for me if they aren't built around some kind of emotional core.

What sort of work have you done in the music video space before?

I've produced and directed a few videos for musician friends, and recently I've had a few low budget commissions for some great up and coming bands - I pride myself in being able to pull together quite grand productions on a shoestring. I think there are a lot of obstacles in people's minds when it comes to filmmaking (finishing the script, finding the location, getting money, getting the right actors...), but the tools and materials aren't expensive anymore. If you've got an idea you really like, there's a way to beg, borrow and steal and get the film made.

Where are you hoping to head in the future?

I love the endless creative possibilities of music video, and I'd love to work with a production company, with bigger budgets, and to continue working with bands whose music I love. I have a couple of fiction projects up my sleeve, and I'm also working on a big documentary project at the moment, which I think will enable me to travel around the world, and hopefully meet some very interesting characters along the way.

  • Matt Phantom Jethro - cheers for the nice comments! Only realised I'd won when I saw yours. Keep up the good work - you're obviously on the right track with being a finalist for David Lynch and I reckon you're in with a good chance with your awesome Alex Clare vid.

jethromassey I think you can also like it multiple times if it's posted in multiple places - so if you have 20 friends that repost the film, you can vote for it 20 times, I think this might be another pretty flawed voting system...

jethromassey Maybe soon time for us genero filmmakers to start a little "when are the results coming?" bombardment of @duranduran on twitter... I'd wait a few days though. They're launching their album right now, doubt they'll be taking time to watch videos this weekend...
